A dental crown is a nifty and versatile solution that allows us to preserve your natural tooth and keep your great smile intact. Traditionally, however, the process to get a crown involved multiple trips to our office to create the impression and then a second visit for a fitting once your crown was ready. And as much as we enjoy seeing our patients, we know you have a better use for your time, which is why we offer CEREC one-visit crowns.

At Today’s Dentistry, Dr. Peter K. Lee offers a wide range of dentistry services that tackle everything from restorative to preventive dentistry. For our San Jose, California, patients who need to protect a compromised tooth, we offer chairside crowns, giving them something to really smile about.

After all, why wait for a crown when you can get one in a single office visit? Here’s how.

A crowning moment

There are many reasons why we turn to a dental crown, which is designed to preserve the integrity of your tooth after decay or damage has taken its toll. For example, if you need a root canal procedure, the work we do to clear the infection in your roots can leave your tooth vulnerable. To protect your tooth down to its roots, we place a crown over the top that fits in seamlessly with your existing teeth, allowing you to smile and chew with ease.

As well, if you have extensive decay in your tooth, and it can no longer hold a filling, your best solution may be a crown. By the same token, any crack or break that can’t be fixed or bonded is best remedied by a dental crown.

Indeed, any condition that leaves your tooth susceptible to further decay or damage can benefit from a crown, which is made from materials that are designed to stand up to the daily rigors of chewing.

The problem was, however, that it took some effort to get your custom crown since we had to take an impression, send it to an outside lab, and then fit it into your mouth once it was ready — a process that could often take weeks and multiple visits. Until now.

In and out

To provide our clients with prompt and effective dental care, we equipped ourselves with the CEREC system, which allows us to custom design and mill your crown right on our premises.

To create your custom crown, we use a digital camera to get an impression of your tooth. After uploading the image to the CEREC system, the software creates a 3D model of your tooth, which it sends to the milling unit for custom manufacture. CEREC crowns are made from ceramic, which is a durable material that mimics your tooth’s natural color.

Once your crown is ready, we bond it into place, making any necessary adjustments to ensure a great fit. All in all, the process takes us only an hour to an hour and a half from start to finish.
