Five Myths and Facts About Invisalign®

Invisalign is becoming a common method of orthodontics for people looking to straighten their teeth. However, this form of dentistry still has a lot of myths going around about it because the aligners haven’t been around for as long as traditional braces have.

Unsure of what is true versus what is fake about Invisalign? In this article, we go over a few myths and a few facts about Invisalign. You’ll have to read on to find out what’s true and what’s not regarding these aligners. If you’re considering Invisalign, you may find this information to be helpful.

Five myths and facts about Invisalign

Myths happen regarding everything, but when it comes to dentistry, it’s important to know the facts!

The patient is in complete control of their treatment

This is a fact! Invisalign offers the advantage of being able to remove the aligners, but this is a double-edged sword. This method of orthodontics requires a very disciplined patient. Because the aligners are removable, that means that the patient can take them out at any time. However, the aligners must be worn at all times, except during eating or cleaning, in order to be effective.

So, long story short, if the patient doesn’t wear their aligners enough, they may be undergoing orthodontic treatment for a lot longer than they expected. It is important that Invisalign aligners are worn for at least 22 hours a day, which can be difficult for some.

Invisalign works so much quicker than traditional braces

This is sadly a myth. While the teeth do shift together when wearing an Invisalign aligner, that isn’t to say that the treatment works quicker. The teeth are still moving at a very slow rate, which is quite hard to measure over the course of treatment.

Invisalign is practically impossible to notice

Fact! Invisalign is completely clear, which means that it is very hard to notice (hence the name). One advantage that Invisalign has over traditional braces is that a lot of people can’t tell when someone is going through the Invisalign process.

The Invisalign process is easier than traditional braces

This is far from true. Sadly, no method of orthodontics is going to seem easy. Shifting the teeth through the use of Invisalign or even traditional braces is not easy, but rather complex. Just like braces, Invisalign also requires that the patient see the orthodontist regularly in order for adjustments and examinations to be done.

Another layer is that Invisalign requires a much more disciplined patient because they are removable. This can make the process more difficult, as opposed to easy.

Invisalign won’t cause discomfort

This is another myth! Invisalign, just like any other form of orthodontics, will induce some discomfort. It is unlikely that there will be physical pain, but as the teeth shift, the mouth may undergo some irritation. Unfortunately, every method of orthodontic treatment will cause some discomfort because the teeth are being urged to shift, which isn’t necessarily natural.
